How do you plan?

What do you do to plan for the future? Do you take time to set goals? Look at what's not working in your life? Perhaps focus on what you want more of?
I have found that there are times when I struggle with goal setting and I have to pause. Its a time when I need to do my best to not think about achieving and allow room for my next evolution. During a time of transition, when you are letting go of the old, and the new hasn't quite formulated, can be difficult. It's like being in the middle of the ocean, having the land you left behind wink out of existence, while your destination is far from sight. That time can be scary and if you don't recognize that you are in transition, it can lead to some pretty bizarre thoughts/behaviors.
Most recently, my desire to achieve wasn't hitting me at all. I had reached a moment where I didn't know what I wanted. I spent a career and life achieving, both personally and professionally, all that I set out to do and I was at a loss. I wanted to set new goals, to think about the future, but I couldn't, no matter what I did.
Over the last year and a half (give or take), I've had some emotional ups and downs as a result. I've beat myself up for not knowing what I wanted. Tried to force myself to set a goal. At one point, I even took a trip down, "perhaps this is it and I'm ready to die" thinking (I can be very mellow dramatic in my own head - can you relate?).
Despite all this meandering, I did my best to keep reminding myself that I was in transition, that when the time was right I would "pop" and get myself back to planning. So here is the thing, if you aren't wanting to plan for your year end, then maybe you are in transition and just need to "be" (we are human BEings after all).
Oh, and for accountability, I am on track to executing against my year end goals! More to come as I'm ready to share!
